Huh. Looks like Shinxy's quite the amnesiac. How concerning.

Hm... this is getting suspicious.

I mean, wiping someone's personal memories when you rip them through time and space is understandable - if you're going to get caught up on little things like retaining the knowledge of your life, friends, and family, you're just being unreasonable - but this means that things are a bit more serious.

It's SCIENCE time, boys and girls!

See, there are actually many different types of amnesia. Most of them are limited to a specific time frame (usually a series of events surrounding a physically or emotionally traumatic event) or are caused by well understood neurological conditions (like epilepsy). Both of these are often temporary.

However, Ms. Tabula Rasa here seems to be experiencing the much less common type called retrograde amnesia (there's also another kind called anterograde amnesia, but that prevents formation of new memories - it's the exact opposite of what we usually imagine as amnesia). This affects long-term memory (Shinxy isn't forgetting things every few minutes, so her short-term is probably fine), and is the kind you'll see in every movie, TV show, and PMD game that isn't Gates to Infinity.

What often isn't mentioned is that there are actually two kinds of long-term memories. Explicit memories are what we usually think of as memories - events that we've experienced, people we recognize, what we ate for dinner - and are what's often damaged or blocked by retrograde amnesia. Implicit memories, on the other hand, are more subtle than that - they're things like knowing how to speak, recognizing what things are (e.g. Shinxy is a shinx), or understanding the meaning of words. This kind of memory is buried much deeper in your brain, and anything that can damage those memories is probably also going to kill you.

So, what's this wall of text have to do with anything? Simple: Shinxy doesn't know what religion is. She doesn't recognize the concept, doesn't know what the word means, and is entirely unfamiliar with the idea. In short, she has either never encountered the idea of religion before (never read it in a book, never heard it mentioned, etc.) or her implicit memory has been damaged in some way. If the former, she must have come from a VERY different society than we're familiar with, which raises all kinds of questions.

But if her implicit memory has been damaged, then literally ANY of her base assumptions - for instance, the fact that she has always been a shinx - could be wrong.

Or I'm horribly overanalyzing all of this, because it's late at night and I'm bored. Make of it what you will.

@Malc Modnar: That was interesting.
Now I have to figure out which is more intriguing:
The questions that arise from that, or the fact that I actually read that whole thing without skipping.

@Malc Modnar:

Could also just be that these societies THINK everyone knows about religion and ASSUME that everyone knows Arceus = One True God and so no one mentions it. And since it is assumed you'll eventually pick it up by yourself without assistance, they never bring it up unless they turn into weird amnesiacs that show up right outside of town.

The atheism amnesia level is at 1000%

A Blank State? That's...disturbing... Sounds like a type of amnesia where everything you know has been deleted from your brain permanently...

My theory is that the Charmender(thing) is priestess and is really evil and tries to kill them.
